Study Smarter Not Harder

A child’s learning style refers to how a child learns.    Is your child’s study skills, providing the best outcome?   When your child’s learning style is met they understand the content material and are getting the most out of their learning.  There are seven learning styles my focus will be on the three main styles.

  1. Visual learners: learn by seeing
  2. Kinetic Learners: Learn by doing
  3. Auditor learners: learn by listening

Visual Learners

Visual learners prefer the use of pictures, graphs, and demonstrations to understand new information. Characteristics of visual learners have a vivid imagination, stares into space, and are quieter students.   Visual learners tend to lose interest when excessive listening is required.
Key Strategies
  • Write down what they need to remember
  • Prefer to work alone versus in a group
  • Rewrite notes without looking at them
  • Looking at pictures to understand the material
  • Review material through reading notes and organize in an outline form.
What Learning Looks Like:
  • Parents allow your child to create a word or crossword puzzle.
  • Design Win, Lose or Draw game
  • Create a memory game

Kinetic Learners

Kinetic Learners retains information when direct involvement, physical response, and are able to move during the learning process.  Kinetic learners are more prone to use all five senses.

       Key Strategies
  • Allow movement while studying
  • Sitting or lying on floor will not distract learning
  • Color transparencies can help focus child’s attention on the material.   Decorate the study area with colored construction paper
  • Create flashcards, floor games, card games when your child is learning new information
  • Utilize multimedia in their learning process
  • Fidgeting while working and listening will not impair their learning.
      What Learning Looks Like:
  • Type spelling words rather than writing them
  • Play computer games or create your own game
  • Your child draws on your back and you guess what they have written

Auditory Learners

Auditory learners benefit through listening and oral presentation, such as speeches and group work.   Auditor learners are more prone to be magnificent listeners, enjoys plays, and music.   They remember what they hear and say.

       Key Strategies
  • Record content material so auditory learner can replay and retain information through hearing it
  • Allow your child to listen to Audiobooks or other media options
  • Allow friends to study with them so they are talking and hearing the content information
  • Noise can be a distraction, but not enough noise can hinder the learning environment
  • Create flashcards using different colors
       What Learning Looks Like:
  • Mock interview, taking turns asking questions
  • Mystery word game the child provides clues pertaining to what they learned in school. Parents are detectives trying to guess the word or subject.
  • Your child pretends to be a news reporter reporting the news.

Research has proven students’ test scores are higher when students change their study habits that match their learning style.   During the test, your child increases his ability to recall information more effectively.   A child who grasps the content will feel prepared and perform better on the test.  You can discover your child’s learning style by clicking the link below.
