3 Surprising Writing Tips

1. Find your favorite quotes and passages first

The hardest part of essay writing is knowing where to start.  If there is material that needs to be referenced (books, articles, videos, etc.), take some time to find the best quotes first.  Use these gems as your outline.

2. Talk about your idea with other people

Writing can be a lonely enterprise.  If working on an essay feels like talking to a wall, reach out to anyone who will listen to your ideas– family, friends or writing coaches.  Discussing your ideas with other human beings will help you find what you really want to say.  It doesn’t matter if they don’t know or understand your topic, because the writer’s job is to explain it effectively.  Talking is good practice.

3. Write the introduction last

Many essayists hit their first road block when trying too hard to craft a wise and pithy introduction.  This is difficult because you are trying to introduce something you haven’t even written yet.  Write the body paragraphs first so you can spend most of your energy working on the juiciest part of the essay.  The introduction will write itself later.

Achieve Writing Success

In conclusion,  It’s ok to write the introduction last. Furthermore, find your favorite quote or passage to help you with your outline.  Talk about your topic.
