What’s Wrong with the  ACT Test Prep Industry

Classrooms with straight rows resemble a  factory line.  Our education system has not changed since the industrial revolution. Test prep companies who are still using the Industrialized Era teaching methodology are not teaching to the students of today.  The students of today are of technology generations and like it or not technology is not just a fad.  21st Century students are micro learners; they want things instantly and in quick frames.   Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are examples that demonstrate the instant and speedy access.

Yackety Yak Don’t Talk Back

During, the course is the instructor doing all the talking while students are listening? Athletes and performers do not learn by reading rather by doing. The student should be the driver of their learning and are actively engaged in their learning process. Athletes and performers attend practice and rehearsals while having a coach or instructor guiding them to reach their full potential. Test prep companies should follow this model used by athletes and performers. They develop their skills through practice while enhancing individual skills. The old teaching method consisted of the teacher in charge, instead of the student in charge of their learning.

Practice Makes Perfect

The ACT is a three and half hour test, and your brain has not build stamina.   Muscle memory is the repetition of skill.  ACT skills are embed through a process of motor memory.    The old way was route memory, which is not the answer.  Students should practice the skills for mastery rather than rote memory.  Test prep companies can accomplish this by training in a variety of learning environments.  For example, students can review grammar rules via, engaging PowerPoint, and an infographic showing the different rules.

The more practice tests a student takes, the more they are improving their muscle memory. Also, the key to reaching maximum learning potential is for students to understand why he or she missed a question.

To sum it all up, ACT prep course should provide plenty of learning opportunity before actual test day.  Do you want your child learning to be like a Telsa or a Model T car?
